Bergen's Elegant Gathering Place

Byparken, meaning simply "The City Park," is Bergen's most central green space, located right in the heart of this UNESCO-recognized city. The park stretches along the shore of the picturesque Lake Lille Lungegårdsvannet, creating a stunning urban landscape framed by Bergen's famous seven mountains.

Established in the mid-19th century, Byparken has served as Bergen's primary gathering place for over 150 years. It's where locals come to walk, sit on benches by the water, enjoy cultural events, and simply take in the extraordinary natural scenery that makes Bergen one of the world's most beautiful cities.

More Than Just a Park

Byparken is the cultural heart of Bergen. Throughout the year, it hosts markets, festivals, and seasonal events. During summer, the park comes alive with outdoor performances, art installations, and vibrant social activity. The lake's fountain is illuminated at night, creating a mesmerizing reflection on the water that draws evening walkers and photographers alike.

The park also serves as an excellent starting point for exploring Bergen's other attractions — the colorful Bryggen wharf, the Fløibanen funicular, and the legendary Bergen Fish Market are all within walking distance.

Best Time to Visit

Bergen is famously rainy, but summer months (June–August) offer the best weather with mild temperatures and longer days. The park is lovely in autumn as well, with reflections of golden leaves on the lake surface. Bergen's Christmas market season (late November–December) transforms the area around Byparken into a festive wonderland.
